Health and Safety Representative

The Health and Safety Representative (Rep) is the person appointed and responsible for creating a safety working environment for employees. All companies in South Africa are subject to a variety of legal requirements regarding Health and Safety Training in the workplace. Such legal requirements include the Occupational Health and Safety Act to name just one. Module 2 – Requirements to conduct safety, health and environmental representation activities at a workplace

  • Requirements to conduct safety, health and environmental representation activities
  • Appointment of health and safety representatives
  • The specific rights, powers, functions and duties of the health and safety rep
  • The importance and purpose of conducting safety, health and environmental representation activities in terms of the consequences to safety, health, environment and production

Module 3 – Participate in the actions to address health, safety and environmental related issues

  • Address health, safety and environmental related issues at the appropriate level
  • Accepted data gathering methods to obtain facts related to health, safety and environment
  • Risk assessment (Hazard identification)
  • Safety inspection
  • Resolve health, safety and environmental related issues according to requirements
  • Good housekeeping
  • Hygiene practices and facilities
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing
  • The importance of resolving safety, health and environmental related issues in terms of the consequences to safety, health, environment and production

Module 4 – Participate in activities within health, safety and environmental structures

  • The extent of participation within health, safety and environmental structures
  • Demonstrate the consultation process with interested and affected parties within the organization
  • How to participate in the activities of the health, safety and environmental structures
  • Perform health, safety and environmental activities in such a manner that fosters teamwork and avoids conflict

The health and safety representative course should be attended by employees who are appointed as the health and safety representative in the workplace.
